Verse Definition & Meaning

Meaning & Definition

Al-An'am 6:84 reveals Allah's blessings upon Ibrahim: 'And We bestowed upon him Ishaq and Yaqub - each of them We guided. And Noah We guided before; and among his descendants, Dawud and Sulayman and Ayub and Yusuf and Musa and Harun. Thus do We reward the Muhsineen (good-doers).' According to authentic Islamic scholarship, this verse describes Allah's divine compensation for Ibrahim's sacrifice of leaving his people and homeland for Allah's sake. The tafsir explains that when Ibrahim reached old age and both he and his wife Sarah had lost hope of having children, Allah sent angels who gave them the miraculous news of Ishaq and even Yaqub (grandson) in their lifetime. Classical scholars note that 'Yaqub' literally means 'multiplying and having offspring,' indicating the continuation of blessed lineage. The verse establishes that after Ibrahim, no prophet was sent except from his descendants, fulfilling Allah's promise that prophethood and scripture would remain in his lineage. The phrase 'thus do We reward the Muhsineen' indicates that Allah's blessing of righteous offspring is a general principle for those who excel in good deeds and sacrifice for His sake, making this both a historical account and a promise for believers.

This definition is based on classical Islamic scholarship and authentic interpretations from recognized scholars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions: Surah Al-An"aam Ayah 84

Find answers to common questions about the meaning, interpretation, and significance of this verse in Islamic teachings and daily life.

Who were the blessed offspring that Allah gave to Prophet Ibrahim?

Allah blessed Prophet Ibrahim with Ishaq (Isaac) and Yaqub (Jacob). According to the tafsir, when Ibrahim and his wife Sarah had reached old age and lost hope of having children, Allah sent angels who gave them the miraculous news of Ishaq, and even promised that they would see their grandson Yaqub in their lifetime. The name 'Yaqub' literally means 'multiplying and having offspring,' indicating the continuation of blessed lineage.

How does Allah reward the Muhsineen (good-doers) according to this verse?

The verse concludes with 'Thus do We reward the Muhsineen (good-doers),' indicating that Allah's blessing of righteous offspring is a general principle for those who excel in good deeds. The tafsir explains that this divine compensation is given to those who sacrifice for Allah's sake, just as Ibrahim left his people and homeland for Allah. The reward includes both blessed lineage and spiritual guidance for their descendants.

Which prophets are mentioned as coming from this blessed lineage?

The verse mentions several prophets from this blessed lineage: from Noah's descendants and Ibrahim's family - Dawud (David), Sulayman (Solomon), Ayub (Job), Yusuf (Joseph), Musa (Moses), and Harun (Aaron). According to Islamic scholarship, after Ibrahim, no prophet was sent except from his descendants, fulfilling Allah's promise that prophethood and scripture would remain in his lineage until the final messenger.

What was the connection between Noah's and Ibrahim's prophetic families?

The verse connects Noah and Ibrahim as two pivotal figures in prophetic history. Classical scholars explain that Noah was the patriarch after whom all humanity descended following the great flood. After Noah, Allah established that prophethood would continue through specific lineages, with Ibrahim's family becoming the primary prophetic line. Both Noah and Ibrahim received divine guidance and were blessed with righteous descendants who carried the message of monotheism.

Why did Allah specifically bless Ibrahim with righteous children after his sacrifice?

According to the tafsir, this was Allah's divine compensation for Ibrahim's sacrifice of leaving his people, community, and homeland for Allah's sake. When Ibrahim migrated from his birthplace and abandoned his idolatrous family, Allah compensated him with something better - righteous children who would follow his religion and through whom his eyes would be comforted. This demonstrates Allah's principle of replacing what believers sacrifice for His sake with something superior.

How were Ishaq and Yaqub specifically guided by Allah?

The phrase 'each of them We guided' indicates that both Ishaq and Yaqub received direct divine guidance. According to Islamic tradition, both became prophets themselves, continuing the monotheistic message of their father Ibrahim. The tafsir explains that this guidance encompassed both spiritual direction toward truth and practical wisdom in calling people to Allah, establishing them as links in the prophetic chain.

What does this verse teach about divine rewards for righteous deeds?

This verse establishes several principles about divine rewards: Allah compensates believers with better than what they sacrifice for His sake, righteous deeds are rewarded both in this world and the hereafter, divine blessings often extend to one's family and descendants, and Allah's rewards surpass human expectations. The tafsir emphasizes that while honor and salvation depend on personal deeds, having righteous ancestors or descendants is also a great blessing that brings benefits.

How does this verse demonstrate the continuity of prophetic mission throughout history?

The verse shows the unbroken chain of prophetic guidance from Noah through Ibrahim to all subsequent prophets. It demonstrates that Allah's message of monotheism was consistent across generations, carried by guided individuals from blessed lineages. The tafsir explains that this continuity serves as proof that the final messenger's call is part of the same divine mission, not something new or separate from previous revelations.
