مَا كَانَ لِاَهۡلِ الۡمَدِيۡنَةِ وَمَنۡ حَوۡلَهُمۡ مِّنَ الۡاَعۡرَابِ اَنۡ يَّتَخَلَّفُوۡا عَنۡ رَّسُوۡلِ اللّٰهِ وَلَا يَرۡغَبُوۡا بِاَنۡفُسِهِمۡ عَنۡ نَّـفۡسِهٖؕ ذٰلِكَ بِاَنَّهُمۡ لَا يُصِيۡبُهُمۡ ظَمَاٌ وَّلَا نَصَبٌ وَّلَا مَخۡمَصَةٌ فِىۡ سَبِيۡلِ اللّٰهِ وَلَا يَطَـُٔــوۡنَ مَوۡطِئًا يَّغِيۡظُ الۡكُفَّارَ وَلَا يَنَالُوۡنَ مِنۡ عَدُوٍّ نَّيۡلاً اِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُمۡ بِهٖ عَمَلٌ صَالِحٌ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يُضِيۡعُ اَجۡرَ الۡمُحۡسِنِيۡنَۙ
— Transliteration
Ma kana li-ahli almadeenatiwaman hawlahum mina al-aAArabi an yatakhallafooAAan rasooli Allahi wala yarghaboo bi-anfusihimAAan nafsihi thalika bi-annahum la yuseebuhumthamaon wala nasabun walamakhmasatun fee sabeeli Allahi wala yataoonamawti-an yagheethu alkuffara walayanaloona min AAaduwwin naylan illa kutiba lahumbihi AAamalun salihun inna Allaha layudeeAAu ajra almuhsineen

اہلِ مدینہ اور ان کے گرد و نواح کے (رہنے والے) دیہاتی لوگوں کے لئے مناسب نہ تھا کہ وہ رسول اﷲ (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) سے (الگ ہو کر) پیچھے رہ جائیں اور نہ یہ کہ ان کی جانِ (مبارک) سے زیادہ اپنی جانوں سے رغبت رکھیں، یہ (حکم) اس لئے ہے کہ انہیں اﷲ کی راہ میں جو پیاس (بھی) لگتی ہے اور جو مشقت (بھی) پہنچتی ہے اور جو بھوک (بھی) لگتی ہے اور جو کسی ایسی جگہ پر چلتے ہیں جہاں کاچلنا کافروں کو غضبناک کرتا ہے اور دشمن سے جو کچھ بھی پاتے ہیں (خواہ قتل اور زخم ہو یا مالِ غنیمت وغیرہ) مگر یہ کہ ہر ایک بات کے بدلہ میں ان کے لئے ایک نیک عمل لکھا جاتا ہے۔ بیشک اللہ نیکوکاروں کا اَجر ضائع نہیں فرماتا

It was not [proper] for the people of Madinah and those surrounding them of the bedouins that they remain behind after [the departure of] the Messenger of Allah or that they prefer themselves over his self. That is because they are not afflicted by thirst or fatigue or hunger in the cause of Allah, nor do they tread on any ground that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they inflict upon an enemy any infliction but that is registered for them as a righteous deed. Indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of the doers of good.

يَحۡسَبُوۡنَ الۡاَحۡزَابَ لَمۡ يَذۡهَبُوۡاۚ وَاِنۡ يَّاۡتِ الۡاَحۡزَابُ يَوَدُّوۡا لَوۡ اَنَّهُمۡ بَادُوۡنَ فِىۡ الۡاَعۡرَابِ يَسۡـاَلُوۡنَ عَنۡ اَنۡۢبَآٮِٕكُمۡؕ وَلَوۡ كَانُوۡا فِيۡكُمۡ مَّا قٰتَلُوۡۤا اِلَّا قَلِيۡلاً
— Transliteration
Yahsaboona al-ahzabalam yathhaboo wa-in ya/ti al-ahzabu yawaddoolaw annahum badoona fee al-aAArabi yas-aloona AAananba-ikum walaw kanoo feekum ma qatalooilla qaleela

یہ لوگ (ابھی تک یہ) گمان کرتے ہیں کہ کافروں کے لشکر (واپس) نہیں گئے اور اگر وہ لشکر (دوبارہ) آجائیں تو یہ چاہیں گے کہ کاش وہ دیہاتیوں میں جا کر بادیہ نشین ہو جائیں (اور) تمہاری خبریں دریافت کرتے رہیں، اور اگر وہ تمہارے اندر موجود ہوں تو بھی بہت ہی کم لوگوں کے سوا وہ جنگ نہیں کریں گے

They think the companies have not [yet] withdrawn. And if the companies should come [again], they would wish they were in the desert among the bedouins, inquiring [from afar] about your news. And if they should be among you, they would not fight except for a little.

سَيَـقُوۡلُ لَكَ الۡمُخَلَّفُوۡنَ مِنَ الۡاَعۡرَابِ شَغَلَـتۡنَاۤ اَمۡوَالُـنَا وَاَهۡلُوۡنَا فَاسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَـنَا ۚ يَقُوۡلُوۡنَ بِاَلۡسِنَتِهِمۡ مَّا لَـيۡسَ فِىۡ قُلُوۡبِهِمۡؕ قُلۡ فَمَنۡ يَّمۡلِكُ لَـكُمۡ مِّنَ اللّٰهِ شَيْئًا اِنۡ اَرَادَ بِكُمۡ ضَرًّا اَوۡ اَرَادَ بِكُمۡ نَفۡعًا ؕ بَلۡ كَانَ اللّٰهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ خَبِيۡرًا
— Transliteration
Sayaqoolu laka almukhallafoona mina al-aAArabishaghalatna amwaluna waahloona fastaghfirlana yaqooloona bi-alsinatihim ma laysa feequloobihim qul faman yamliku lakum mina Allahi shay-an inarada bikum darran aw arada bikum nafAAanbal kana Allahu bima taAAmaloona khabeera

عنقریب دیہاتیوں میں سے وہ لوگ جو (حدیبیہ میں شرکت سے) پیچھے رہ گئے تھے آپ سے (معذرۃً یہ) کہیں گے کہ ہمارے اموال اور اہل و عیال نے ہمیں مشغول کر رکھا تھا (اس لئے ہم آپ کی معیت سے محروم رہ گئے) سو آپ ہمارے لئے بخشش طلب کریں۔ یہ لوگ اپنی زبانوں سے وہ (باتیں) کہتے ہیں جو ان کے دلوں میں نہیں ہیں۔ آپ فرما دیں کہ کون ہے جو تمہیں اﷲ کے (فیصلے کے) خلاف بچانے کا اختیار رکھتا ہو اگر اس نے تمہارے نقصان کا ارادہ فرما لیا ہو یا تمہارے نفع کا ارادہ فرما لیا ہو، بلکہ اﷲ تمہارے کاموں سے اچھی طرح باخبر ہےo

Those who remained behind of the bedouins will say to you, "Our properties and our families occupied us, so ask forgiveness for us." They say with their tongues what is not within their hearts. Say, "Then who could prevent Allah at all if He intended for you harm or intended for you benefit? Rather, ever is Allah, with what you do, Acquainted.

— Transliteration
Qul lilmukhallafeena mina al-aAArabisatudAAawna ila qawmin olee ba/sin shadeedin tuqatiloonahumaw yuslimoona fa-in tuteeAAoo yu/tikumu Allahuajran hasanan wa-in tatawallaw kama tawallaytum minqablu yuAAaththibkum AAathaban aleema

آپ دیہاتیوں میں سے پیچھے رہ جانے والوں سے فرما دیں کہ تم عنقریب ایک سخت جنگ جو قوم (سے جہاد) کی طرف بلائے جاؤ گے تم ان سے جنگ کرتے رہو گے یا وہ مسلمان ہو جائیں گے، سو اگر تم حکم مان لوگے تو اﷲ تمہیں بہترین اجر عطا فرمائے گا۔ اور اگر تم رُوگردانی کرو گے جیسے تم نے پہلے رُوگردانی کی تھی تو وہ تمہیں دردناک عذاب میں مبتلا کر دے گاo

Say to those who remained behind of the bedouins, "You will be called to [face] a people of great military might; you may fight them, or they will submit. So if you obey, Allah will give you a good reward; but if you turn away as you turned away before, He will punish you with a painful punishment."

قَالَتِ الۡاَعۡرَابُ اٰمَنَّا ؕ قُل لَّمۡ تُؤۡمِنُوۡا وَلٰـكِنۡ قُوۡلُوۡۤا اَسۡلَمۡنَا وَلَمَّا يَدۡخُلِ الۡاِيۡمَانُ فِىۡ قُلُوۡبِكُمۡۚ وَاِنۡ تُطِيۡعُوۡا اللّٰهَ وَرَسُوۡلَهٗ لَا يَلِتۡكُمۡ مِّنۡ اَعۡمَالِكُمۡ شَيْئًا ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُوۡرٌ رَّحِيۡمٌ
— Transliteration
Qalati al-aAArabu amannaqul lam tu/minoo walakin qooloo aslamna walammayadkhuli al-eemanu fee quloobikum wa-in tuteeAAooAllaha warasoolahu la yalitkum min aAAmalikumshay-an inna Allaha ghafoorun raheem

دیہاتی لوگ کہتے ہیں کہ ہم ایمان لائے ہیں، آپ فرما دیجئے: تم ایمان نہیں لائے، ہاں یہ کہو کہ ہم اسلام لائے ہیں اور ابھی ایمان تمہارے دلوں میں داخل ہی نہیں ہوا، اور اگر تم اﷲ اور اس کے رسول (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کی اطاعت کرو تو وہ تمہارے اعمال (کے ثواب میں) سے کچھ بھی کم نہیں کرے گا، بیشک اﷲ بہت بخشنے والا بہت رحم فرمانے والا ہےo

The bedouins say, "We have believed." Say, "You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."
