Surah Al-Baqara 2:40 - Tafsir & Translation

Allah made a covenant with the Children of Israel to believe in His messengers, including Prophet Muhammad, perform prayers, give charity, and follow divine guidance. In return, Allah promised to forgive their sins and admit them to Paradise.

Allah reminds the Children of Israel of His past favors - like sending prophets among them, revealing books, saving them from Pharaoh, and providing sustenance - to establish His generosity before calling them to reciprocate with obedience and covenant fulfillment.

Allah's favors included sending numerous prophets among them, revealing the Torah, making water gush from stones, sending down manna and quails for sustenance, saving them from Pharaoh's oppression, and granting them knowledge and prophethood.

Believers should regularly reflect on Allah's countless blessings, express gratitude through worship and obedience, use blessings according to divine guidance, and recognize that all good comes from Allah alone, not from their own efforts.

Fearing Allah alone means prioritizing His commands over all other considerations, not letting worldly fears prevent obedience to divine guidance, trusting in Allah's protection rather than human powers, and being conscious of divine accountability in all actions.

Fulfilling promises to Allah demonstrates sincerity of faith, integrity of character, and recognition of divine authority. Breaking promises leads to spiritual corruption, loss of divine blessings, and accountability in the afterlife.

Muslims should remember Allah's countless favors, fulfill their covenant of faith through worship and righteous deeds, fear Allah alone rather than worldly powers, and maintain gratitude and obedience as conditions for continued divine blessings.

Allah's approach teaches us to remind people of blessings before making requests, use encouragement alongside warnings, maintain patience with those who stray, and that divine mercy is always available for those who return to the covenant.
